FDPSAAN to participate in Global Fire Leadership Conference

FDPSAAN is one of the participants invited for the Global Fire Leadership Conference taking place in Chicago and Washington,USA from 21st -26th September 2008

World Fire Safety Day

Proposed “World Fire Safety Day”FDPSAAN has also conceived the idea of having a day set aside worldwide by United Nations as WORLD FIRE SAFETY DAY to raise global awareness on fire safety.
Currently, the NGO is already making necessary contacts at Regional, Continental and International level to promote the idea of this proposed World Fire Safety Day initiative.

This idea came out of the extensive study/research conducted by FDPSAAN that unveiled several fundamental factors why a day should be set aside by United Nations as an International day that will focus specifically on fire related issue at global level.

Presently United Nations has over 200 recognized International Days that were set aside by UN in different fields of human endeavour that touches on health, environment, music, economy, business, culture and social aspect among others.

Historically, the emergency of fire is not only as old as the World itself, but is very strategic to existence of human evolution. Since the discovery of fire in the Stone Age, it has not only played an important   role in the sustenance of human being, but on the hand poses a major threat and challenges to our survival.

There are always two faces of Fire, “beneficial fire and detrimental fire”, unfortunately the detrimental fires has been on the increase globally, causing destructions and devastating effect in every human live.
While many countries have developed sophisticated fire prevention programme and fire suppression organization to protect people and natural resources from fire destruction, so many countries especially in the developing nations are far behind.

In order to bridge this gap, and harmonize fire activities/programme and stimulate globally co-operation among nations in the area of fire, FDPSAAN considered the need for a recognized United Nations day on Fire.

After all, Fire is the opposite of Water or vice-versa, if a day has over the years been designated by United Nations as World Water Day then the justification for a World Fire Safety Day is long overdue.
Although Fire Weeks are celebrated annually in many parts of the world, a close observation has shown that most countries do not mark or are not aware of existence of such Fire weeks especially in the developing countries.

Unlike other United Nations International Days, Fire Week is not inscribed in the United Nations programme, thereby making Fire Week confine within small localities where it is celebrated without global impact and outlook.

But on the other hand if the idea of World Fire Safety Day is adopted, it will open up new opportunities for a more global attention in the area of fire, as the world is expected to use this particular Day to organize seminars, workshops, rallies, and conferences on fire safety worldwide that will lead to new initiatives, ideas and discoveries which will eventually give rise to a more sustainable global programme on fire disaster prevention and fire-fighting around the world. The World Fire Safety Day is aim at capturing people’s interest in the area of fire; promote global fire awareness and knowledge to build communities that will be fire safe for our benefits and future generations.

Aims and Benefits of World Fire Safety Day

  • Like other United Nations declared annual days celebration, the World Fire Safety Day is aimed at promoting a more co-ordinated global awareness on fire safety with various fire safety activities organize to mark each year’s event with common purpose all over the world.
  • It will also serve as a day to remember and commemorate with fire victims, fire fighters that loss their lives, properties or sustain injuries world over.
  • The declaration of World Fire Safety Day will also help to open –up a better Forum for interaction and co-operation amongst nations of the world on fire related areas that will lead to exchange of ideas, support to less develop nation’s, training/capacity building, and funding.
  • It will help to bring the issue of fire  to the front burner of global discuss that will further assist to integrate fire issue in the policy matters of United Nations and  Governments of various nations world over.
  • When these are achieved, there is no doubt that  the global increase in the spate of fire disasters presently experienced universally will be reduced drastically and the world will be much more safer from the threat of fire destructions
  • We need your support and feedback/commend on this proposal recommending to United Nations to designate a day as WORLD FIRE SAFETY DAY
